REALTOR® Safety
Your safety should never be an afterthought. REALTORS® often meet new people, show vacant properties, host open houses, and work outside traditional office settings. Having a personal safety plan helps protect you, your clients, and your business.
We encourage our members to make safety part of their everyday routine by using trusted resources, planning ahead, and staying alert in every real estate setting.
Start with a Personal Safety Plan
Before meeting a new client or showing a property, take a few minutes to prepare.
- Verify the identity of new prospects before meeting in person.
- Meet first-time clients in a public place or at your office when possible.
- Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.
- Keep your phone charged and easily accessible.
- Park where you can leave quickly if needed.
- Trust your instincts and leave any situation that feels unsafe.
Make Safety Part of Your Business Plan
Safety is most effective when it becomes part of your daily routine. From verifying new clients and preparing for showings to protecting personal information online, small habits can help reduce risk and improve preparedness.
The National Association of REALTORS® provides safety resources, educational materials, videos, and best practices designed specifically for real estate professionals. Members are encouraged to review these resources regularly and incorporate safety planning into their business operations.

'Stay Safe in 5' Video Series
The Atlanta REALTORS® Association (ARA), in partnership with the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR), created the Stay Safe in 5 video series to help REALTORS® enhance their situational awareness and personal safety skills.
Real estate professionals often work independently in unfamiliar environments, including vacant homes, open houses, and private showings. These brief training videos demonstrate practical safety techniques, defensive maneuvers, and strategies for recognizing and responding to potentially dangerous situations.
While prevention remains the best defense, Stay Safe in 5 helps REALTORS® prepare for the unexpected and prioritize their personal safety every day.
